Jon Zimmerman started in lane 5 in the seven boat final heat at the Air Guard Championship presented by Degree Men in San Diego and finished the five lap final in a well-earned fifth place after struggling most of the weekend to find a good race pace.

Although it’s not the result we’d like, we’re extremely happy to have finished the North American H1 Unlimited tour with our boat intact and not requiring any extensive repairs before getting on the boat in Jacksonville next week for the trip to Doha, Qatar for the UIM World Championships in November.

With a six boat field reduced to five with the withdrawal of the U-13, Jon started the U-37 Degree Men from lane six and maintained his incredible streak of finishes with a third place in Heat 2B due to the U-17 going dead in the water and an N2 violation by Greg Hopp in the U-100.

U-37 Degree Men Crew Chief Scott Raney

According to U-37 Degree Men Crew Chief Scott Raney “San Diego obviously has been a disappointment so far, since we made numerous changes to the boat after Seattle in a search for more speed, and so far they haven’t panned out. As a matter of fact, they went against us here in San Diego, and a fair chunk of both days has been dedicated to reversing the changes we made.”

Raney added “Of course that’s been frustrating for the entire crew, since we’re used to going forward, not backwards. With the replacement boat, we’ve experienced a pretty steep learning curve and it’s been difficult to drag more speed out of the old hull.”

Even though the Fred Leland-owned U-37 is not running at the top of the leaderboard, Raney enthused about driver Jon Zimmerman: “Jon’s done everything we’ve asked of him so far this season and has been fantastic in following our game plan and bringing the boat back every time. We’ve collected points in every heat since Jon joined the team, and that’s about all we can ask of anyone.”

Work continues on the boat this morning in preparation for Heat 2B at 12:20 PM, where the U-37 will start in Lane 6.
