Peters & May RacingIn a sport where getting there first is paramount, Peters & May USA, a leading global boat shipping company, is focused on first, getting them there. What started as a sponsorship moving unlimited hydroplanes to international races has led to several new sponsorships with racers in several different series. Racing has gotten into the company’s blood, so a new Peters & May Racing logo was developed to unite the racing teams under its umbrella of sponsorships.

While one of its more high-profile clients, The Qatar Marine Sports Federation (QMSF) readies for its 2010 World Championship Oryx Cup, Peters & May USA is proud to announce that the QMSF has chosen the company to be its Official Logistics Provider. For the second consecutive year Peters & May is responsible for shipping the entire H1 fleet to the Capital city of Doha. Last year, Peters & May USA transported the Qatar Team’s two Super Cat race boats to Key West for the US SBI World Championship races and is always on call to handle the organization’s shipments whether it is its race boats, support vehicles or racing spares. “We rely on Peters & May to ensure the safe and timely delivery of all of our boats and equipment,” states Sheikh Hassan, who has participated in and won a number of races in the US with international British racer Steve Curtis.

Other race teams are benefitting from Peters & May USA’s enthusiasm for the sport. The Peters & May-sponsored H1 U-37 Schumacher Racing team, and it’s H1 Unlimited series sponsorship, has led to new relationships and expanded old ones, as driver JW Myers – injured after crashing earlier this year in the original U-37 Miss Peters & May – has inked a deal to compete in his first UIM US Title Series race under the Peters & May banner. Several other H1 Unlimited drivers will also fly their Peters & May chartreuse-colored boats across the waters of other classes. Continue Reading…

D2D: Please share with us some of you background, such as where you were born and raised, etc.
DH: I was born in Chertsey, UK and moved the Dubai when I was 3 years old. Spent the next 14 years moving between the UK and Dubai for school. Finally settled back into Dubai in 1994 for work. I grew up around the guys at Victory Team and Al Shaali Marine and that was my first bite of power boat racing. Moved to Chicago in 2007.

D2D: What is your title and responsibility with Peters and May?
DH: Managing Director / President – responsible for managing the two U.S. offices and developing business in the USA, Canada, Central and South America.

D2D: How did you and Peters and May became involved in the sport?
DH: We have been working with Sheikh Hassan and the QMSF for some time now and when the Doha race was first arranged he asked us to meet Sam Cole to discuss the shipping. We attended the Evansville race and immediately became hooked on the sport.

D2D: How did the U-37 sponsorship come about?
DH: We were fortunate enough to be able to sponsor the U-37 for the first Oryx cup. During the event we were able to get to know the team and see their potential and desire to win. At the same time we saw great potential in the sport, despite some people’s views; this sport is progressing and reaching new audiences. As a sponsor it is certainly a different, but effective way, to get your name out there!

Peters & May

Schumacher Racing/Miss Peters & May Have “Get it Done” Attitude

Effort Demonstrates Perfect Sponsor-Race Team Pairing

Split-second timing, quick decision making, strong relationships and a team that identifies resources, pulls together, and does “whatever it takes” to get the job done are important ingredients in both racing and in business.  Recently, with international shipping company, Peters & May USA and the Schumacher Racing U-37 Hydroplane team, these components demonstrated how a race team can reflect the philosophy and responsibility of its sponsor.

Miss Peters & May

Miss Peters & May

This year, Peters & May USA assumed title sponsorship of the Schumacher Racing U-37 Hydroplane for the 2010 race season. At the July Gold Cup race in Detroit, Peters & May USA Managing Director David Holley watched in horror along with team owners Bill & Jane Schumacher as their driver J.W. Myers put the U-37 into a seawall at more than 100 mph (avoiding the rest of the race field and crowded pit area).  He suffered multiple fractures to his foot and shredded the forward sponsons all the way back to the cockpit.

“What happened after was so analogous to what we do in our business, I was stunned!” said Holley.  The Schumachers were able to capitalize on their reputation, relationships, experience and team to find solutions; in this case, a boat, a driver and getting everything race-ready in one week.”

After it was clear that Myers was not seriously injured, though “out of commission” for a time, Schumacher Racing was faced with a decision; and a split one at that, with Bill thinking the season was over, and Jane eager to find a way to keep racing. The team was solidly in Jane’s corner, and she used her sponsor’s influence to seal the deal. “Peters & May is a dynamic company with its heart in our race program. Dave Holley understands the business of boat racing,” she said, “He is an active and involved sponsor and expressed a desire to go forward.”

Holley marveled at how the relationships Schumacher Racing fostered over the years came to the fore. “Both Greg O’Farrell and Fred Leland — competitive team owners mind you – approached the Miss Peters & May crew with offers to lease us a hull.  Those offers, according to Jane Schumacher, were extended based as much on the team’s reputation as on the relationships. “These very generous offers were predicated on our reputation. Both Fred and Greg understood that our crew — led by Scott Raney — is so good they needn’t worry about having their equipment wrecked. In fact, the crew would likely make it better,” Schumacher said.

In the same way Peters & May uses its worldwide network of offices and affiliates to solve marine shipping logistics, the Schumacher Racing crew tapped long-time collaborators West Coast Collision Center and Prism Graphic to outfit, rig, paint and brand the “new” U-37, having it race-ready in time for the Tri-Cities race in Kennewick, WA July 23-25. Schumacher Racing also worked with team owner/driver Ken Muscatel to secure the services of veteran driver Jon Zimmerman for the remainder of the season.

The team was recognized for its efforts by Stream Light Flashlights with its “Light It Up” award that goes to the individual or team whose efforts result in a race’s “brightest moment.”

“It was inspiring to be a part of this herculean effort,” said Holley “Our race team responded in exactly the way our Peters & May team responds on a daily basis. We use our experience, relationships and expertise to deliver solutions to our customers. Fortunately, we do it without a horrific crash as the catalyst!”

West Coast Collision

West Coast Collision

Schumacher Racing and the U-37 Miss Peters & May Racing Team is proud to announce a partnership with Jeff Stoneman and West Coast Collision Center of Mountlake Terrace, WA for the 2010 H1 Unlimited racing series.  “Our team has been working with West Coast Collision since 2004, but this year Jeff and his company really stepped up to the plate”, said U-37 Crew Chief Scott Raney.  “They did a great job assisting us and providing technical expertise to prepare the T-4 hull for the season. Unfortunately, we kind of scratched the paint job up a little back in Detroit.”

Now, as the U-37 team races to prepare a back-up hull for competition at Seattle next week, West Coast Collision is playing an even bigger role.  With only a few days to outfit the back-up boat with the team’s regular equipment, time is of the essence. West Coast Collision will be preparing and painting components for Pasco, and then helping with a complete repaint to Peters & May colors before Seafair. “It’s really a chance for us to help showcase the kind of work Jeff’s team can do”, said Raney. “They’ve helped us so much…we really want to help them also.”

West Coast Collision Center is located at 21718 66th Ave W, #200, Mountlake Terrace, WA 98043. Owner Jeff Stoneman can be reached at (425) 774-9222.

The 2010 U-37 Miss Peters & May

The 2010 U-37 Miss Peters & May

Billy Schumacher Racing and Peters & May are proud to present the 2010 Miss Peters & May U37 Unlimited Hydroplane. The Chartreuse, Red, and Metallic Blue scheme is the brainchild of famed artist Gary Ebert of Port Orchard, WA.

When asked on how he developed this eye catching formula, Ebert said “It was important for the colors and paint to be visually appealing to the fans from a distance of around 100 yards away. I sat down with many ideas and generated about 5 different schemes and Billy and the team chose the one they liked the best. I have designed dozens of paint schemes for hydroplanes over the years and it was important to create something new that hasn’t been seen before.”

As the season nears, visit www.U-37.com for additional new images of the race boat.

“We don’t see the economy as a detriment to our business,” says David Holley, Managing Director of the USA’s largest international boat transport specialist, “Our volume is building!”

Peters & May shipped over 350 boats last month-a significant increase over the preceding months. While April is a busy month for vessels moving to the Mediterranean for the summer, the company has also seen significant increases in the Australian, Middle Eastern and Far Eastern markets. “This is positive news and a welcome break from the doom and gloom that has surrounded the whole marine industry for the past 2 years,” Holley commented.

The Chicago based company is title sponsor of the U-37 racing team as well as an H1 Unlimited associate sponsor and marine logistics partner.

The increased volume demonstrates Peters & May’s growth in the US marine shipping market. After two years doing business from its Chicago office, new client relationships have been built and the company is recruiting new staff to accommodate the increased market share.

“Our success is a reflection of the experience of our staff and the relationships we hold with our key shipping lines,” says Holley, “We’ll continue to expand as the marine market rebuilds. Our company is diversified and we have shipping solutions for boats ranging in size from 16 feet up to 150 feet.”

Peters & May USA has earned A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau and continues to build its status as preferred transporter for many major boat manufacturers including Viking yachts and Ski Nautique, as well as race teams and private boat owners. A key to the company’s success is its full package of transport solutions including shrink wrapping, shipping cradles, tracking, marine transit insurance, and door-to-door delivery.

“Having our own offices around the globe enables us to control the quality of our service as well as pricing,” Holley adds, “We are able to offer excellent rates without compromising the quality of the service”.

When David Holley, Managing Director of Peters & May USA and Sheikh Hassan bin Jabor Al-Thani of Qatar went deep sea fishing off the coast of Florida in early May, rough seas made the sport fishing pretty slow.  Then they decided to see what they could find down a little deeper. The answer came in the form of a couple of huge sharks, estimated to be about 250 pounds each, that were caught and released.

Sheikh Hassan is President of the Qatar Marine Sports Federation, promoters of the Oryx Cup UIM World Championship which will be held for the second time in November.

Peters & May is the H1 Unlimited partner for international shipping logistics, responsible for getting the Unlimited fleet to and from the Middle East.

Holley said the pair had a great time on the fishing trip, despite the rough conditions and lack of action early on.  “Sheikh Hassan kept telling me how to drive the boat,” he commented. ” He thought we should be going much faster. After a slow start, things got very interesting when we hooked up with the sharks.”

Peters and May recently shipped the Team Qatar offshore boats and support equipment from South Hampton, England to Brunswick, Georgia in preparation for the team’s participation in the new OPA Offshore series.

Sheikh Hassan and new team driver Ali Al-Neama will compete in the eight race OPA series beginning at Ocean City, Maryland May 28-30.
